Student Evaluations

King's College

Quantitative Data from Student Evaluations

The following data is compiled from student evaluation forms from fourteen of the sixteen courses I taught at King’s College during the 2014–2015 and 2015–2016 academic years. (The other two courses had an enrollment of 4 or less, for which student evaluation forms are not filled out.) Each semester, students rank instructors on a 7-point scale on 29 different statements.

The following chart represents the average rating I received for each statement across all courses. I separated my ratings into those received for beginning and intermediate level language courses, which fulfill a core requirement for students at King’s College, and those received for upper level classes in Spanish language, culture, and literature, which are typically taken by our majors and minors. I have bolded ratings for which my cumulative average is >6.7 on a 7-point scale, as these numbers highlight my greatest strengths in the classroom.

When our evaluation forms are returned to us, we also receive data reporting the average score for each statement in our department as a whole, as well as the average score for each statement college-wide. Furthermore, college-wide percentile brackets are given for each statement to show the range of scores falling between 10%–90%. Any individual result that falls in the top or the bottom 10% of scores college-wide is flagged.

Of the 406 total ratings I have received (29 statements x 14 courses), 325 were above the average score for their respective statement college-wide, which calculates to an 80% rate of scoring above the college-wide average. 98 of those scores were in the top 10% of all scores for their respective statement, averaged across all courses college-wide, which calculates to a 24% rate of scoring in the top 10%. Of particular note are the evaluations I received in my Introduction to Golden Age Literature course, in which my score for each of the 29 statements was in the top 10% college-wide, and 23 of the 29 ratings were a perfect 7/7.

SPAN 110, Elementary Spanish I — Fall 2010

Class size: 15 (13 for credit, 2 auditors)
Each student had the opportunity to fill out both an online evaluation and a paper evaluation. 7 students filled out the online form, and 10 students filled out the paper form. 100% of the responses received are included below.

The online form asked students: “Please evaluate each instructor of Spanish 110 01. What are the instructor’s strengths and weaknesses, and in what ways might his/her teaching be improved?”

1)   “Jennifer was an amazing teacher. She was so helpful and funny. I didn’t even mind waking up early just because I know that her love of Spanish would make class enjoyable. She was patient and encouraging. She was great!”

4)   “Ms. Darrell was an enthusiastic and conscientious instructor however, portions [of] classtime were often spent on didactic recitation of textbook exercises that seemed to not be the most efficient. I had a hard time in Spanish 110, but she made it much better and encouraged me, and by the end of the course I seem to have gotten it. I would definitely take more courses with Jennifer and I am so happy that she was my teacher! She is very smart and has an infectious passion for Spanish and I will be sticking with it, a large part due to her! Thank you.”

The paper form asked students to respond to a series of statements regarding my teaching on a scale of 1-5, where 1 meant “Strongly disagree,” and 5 meant “Strongly agree.” I have averaged the responses of all ten responding students.

SPAN 120, Elementary Spanish II — Spring 2011

Class size: 17 (15 for credit, 2 auditors)
Each student had the opportunity to fill out both an online evaluation and a paper evaluation. 11 students filled out the online form, and 16 students filled out the paper form. 100% of the responses received are included below.

The online form asked students: “Please evaluate each instructor of Spanish 120 01. What are the instructor’s strengths and weaknesses, and in what ways might his/her teaching be improved?”

1)   “Jennifer Darrell honestly exceeded any and all of my expectations for the Spanish 120 01 section of the course. Jennifer went above and beyond in her efforts to effectively teach the students the course material. She was always enthusiastic and willing to help her students understand concepts in a new light. Jennifer successfully engaged her students by implementing a few of her own interactive activities, as well as making sure to have the students consistently speak Spanish with one another. As one of her students, I can predict that many, if not all of the other students in the class, feel the same way about Jennifer’s passion for preparing students in their quest of becoming more proficient and confident Spanish speakers and writers.”
2)   “Amazing instructor so passionate and good with outside help and providing resources. Very knowledgeable and encouraging.”
3)   “Profesora Darrell was fantastic! Whenever I would email her with questions, she would always reply back soon after, and in class I never once felt like I was lost. She also had us make a class project at the end of the year that was basically a collection of some short stories we had written earlier and then edited, and that whole process really made me feel like I was understanding Spanish.”
4)   “BEST TEACHER EVER!! Her classes are interesting and she always mixes it up. It is hard to go every day just because of the nature of college and such, but she makes it so worthwhile. I loved this class, mostly because Professor Darrell was so good!”
5)   “Ms. Darrell was a good instructor who really cared if a student understood the information. Her greatest weakness was that she was forced to give her explanations in Spanish.”
6)   “Ms. Darrell was an excellent instructor. She effectively encouraged class participation. Though she created a relaxed environment for us, it did not take away from the focus of the class. I have nothing but positive remarks for this particular instructor.”
7)   “Excellent professor, great at explaining concepts, grammar rules, very knowledgeable about the language subtleties, easy to approach. Good enough so that I enjoyed coming to her class every morning at 8:20 am.”
8)   “Jennifer was an excellent professor—she was organized, enthusiastic, and did a great job of explaining even the most difficult grammatical concepts.”
9)   “Profesora Darrell is fantastic. I’ve had her for L1 and L2 and love her. She’s helpful, kind funny, and devoted to her students.”
10)  “Jennifer was great, and cared a lot about making class fun and interesting. She went out of her way to help the class with our extra book of short stories, which was really cool. I found Jennifer to be very knowledgeable about the subject and wa always very helpful when I had questions.”
11)  "Jennifer Darrell is the model professor. She clearly cares about her students and goes above and beyond what the syllabus says to create an awesome class environment. She is very knowledgeable, but she is willing to go the extra mile to find out an answer to a question if she isn’t equipped to answer it.”

The paper form asked students to respond to a series of statements regarding my teaching on a scale of 1-5, where 1 meant “Strongly disagree,” and 5 meant “Strongly agree.” I have averaged the responses of all ten responding students.

2)   The instructor delivered clear, organized explanations: 4.94/5
3)   The instructor planned class activities in detail: 4.87/5

SPAN 130, Intermediate Spanish I — Spring 2012

Class size: 16 (all for credit)
Each student had the opportunity to fill out both an online evaluation and a paper evaluation. 13 students filled out the online form. The paper evaluations are still being processed by the language program and have not been released to the instructors yet, but I would be happy to provide them as soon as I receive them, should this be of interest. 100% of the responses received from the online form are included below.

The online form asked students: “Please evaluate each instructor of Spanish 130 01. What are the instructor’s strengths and weaknesses, and in what ways might his/her teaching be improved?”

1)   “Jennifer Darrell is an awesome teacher. She genuinely cares about her students and thoroughly understands Spanish. Her explanations provided a clear insight into the language and her innovative teaching methods, such as our play, were so great.”
2)   “GREAT! I love Jennifer. She was engaging and came up with great creative lesson plans that made the class go by quickly.”
3)   “Awesome teacher – she really cares about her students learning the material and she is very knowledgeable of Spanish.”
4)   “She was a good teacher. Very enthusiastic about the material.”
5)   “Jennifer is amazing. She answered my questions well, and always made class funny/interesting.”
6)   “Jennifer Darrell was awesome. She is a wonderful person and it may take a while to warm up [to] her, but she is very welcoming and accommodating. After entering the class a week late, she helped me catch up to speed and gave me an opportunity to catch up on the work. She is always available for help whether it's a specific topic or just speech in general. Since she is not a native speaker, it’s inspiring for a student because one sees that you can actually speak Spanish fluently if you work at it!”
7)   “I thought Jennifer was great! I have been very impressed with all of my Spanish teachers throughout my time at Yale. She was good at explaining grammatical points which I previously had trouble with. I also enjoyed the murder mystery project she arranged very much.”
8)   “Professor Darrell is fantastic! She graciously speaks at a pace we all can understand and does everything she can to make sure we understand the lesson. She engages students by asking other students to answer another student’s question. Her warm demeanor makes the classroom a very welcoming place. It is also clear that she enjoys her job and interacting with students since she puts in the extra effort [to] make the class fun (like the murder mystery.) She has no real weaknesses as an instructor, but I think she could make the class more interesting by adding small snippets of what native speakers say or what different cultures say (es probable que vs. a lo major: which should be used for a stronger sentence.) Other than that, I think she is a great Spanish teacher!”
9)   “Professor Darrell is awesome! She puts in so much time and effort into the class and makes it really fun. She is always available to meet with us outside of class, and is very helpful.”
10)  “Wonderful teacher, gives a lot to her students.”
11)    “Great teacher. Very passionate.”
12)   “Professor Darrell is the best! She has tons of energy and is super supportive. She is also a ton of fun.”
13)   “Prof. Darrell was a really great professor to have. She knew the material well, but what really made her stand out was her enthusiasm about and care for the class. Not only did she come up with a creative wedding play for us to do during the term, but she was always looking for ways to help us with the material if we needed it. In particular, the amount of effort she put in around final exam time outside of class to help us prepare was significant, and was definitely a major help for me going into the exam. Overall, terrific professor, and I would absolutely take another Spanish class from her given the chance.”

Letter of Recommendation from Former Student

  "Recommendation for Jennifer Darrell

I have known Jennifer for a little over 2 years in many capacities: first as a professor, a mentor, and also as a friend. I would recommend her for any teaching within your school based on the following anecdotes.

In my three semesters of Spanish at Yale University, I had the pleasure of taking Introductory Spanish with Jennifer Darrell. This was her first class at Yale University and also my first Spanish class. Although I was quite intimidated by the first class, as she jumped right into full Spanish after only a few minutes of names and introductions, she made me feel as though I belonged in the class. After the class, I approached her and voiced my concerns, but she let me know that I was indeed in the right place and I could use her as a resource whenever I needed it. I had heard this before, but professors at Yale rarely want to spend time outside of class working with students, but I could tell that Jennifer was genuine and I have felt comfortable using Jennifer as a resource throughout my years in Spanish.

In my second semester of Spanish at Yale, the level-two class was a mixture of artists, scientists, lawyers, and students of every class year, including graduate students. Jennifer noticed our unique desire for creative writing and incorporated a book-making project into the curriculum. She maintained the set syllabus, but allowed us the opportunity to flex our creative muscles and utilized our individual talents. Because of this special task, we tackled our struggles with writing, especially grammar, head on, learning much more than solely by doing the prescribed workbook pages. Her ability to incorporate this project while also completing the necessary tasks on the level-two syllabus shows her ability to plan her own curriculum while maintaining the goals of the department, communicate with the students, understand the class and its unique learning style, and also her creativity as a professor. I was pleased to receive our final bound book and Alcalde sin corazón will remain on my shelf forever.

In my third semester of Spanish, I was pleased that it looked as though Jennifer would be my teacher again. Unfortunately for my class, but fortunately for Jennifer, she was able to teach a seminar on Don Quixote for the semester. She was replaced but another professor that was much less in tune with our classes specific needs. In order to maintain my grade in the class, I knew I needed outside help, but the professor was not helpful outside of class, so I reached out to Jennifer. Amazingly, she agreed to meet with my on a weekly basis, and we worked on conversation and writing weekly. She clearly went above and beyond her job description, as I was not even one of her students and met with me. Thanks to Jennifer, my grade in my third semester of Spanish was my best one yet.

Due to my improving grades and my new love for Spanish, I decided to take on the reading of Don Quixote in its original language. I knew it would be difficult, but I also knew the right professor assisting me would give me a unique appreciation for the book. As her thesis involves Don Quixote, Jennifer is an expert in the book, and it was clear she had read and discussed it many times. She gave me insights into the book that I would not have gotten from reading it by myself in any language. I struggled through the book at first, reading only one or two pages a week, but by the end of the semester I had read nearly 150 pages. We had discussed several of the stories in Don Quixote and Cervantes in both English and Spanish, which showed my improvement from those first semester of Spanish. Because of her patience, encouragement, and generosity, I am confident in my Spanish skills and have continued to read Don Quixote. There are not many professors to whom I can attribute my love for learning, but Jennifer Darrell is one. She would be an asset to any program, and any of her future students would be lucky to work with her.

Sincerely,
Cat Harwood"
